Sion about what its "top five priorities" were for 2004. yeats said the impact measures and discussion about priorities were skipped this year because it's the second year of a two-year budget. the city plans its budgets two years in advance, to allow for more advanced planning and to save money. other council members also point out that benest drafts the budget knowing the direction the council prefers. "i'm quite comfortable with the proposal he has made, " councilwoman dena mossar said. "i think he has done a yeoman's job of facing significant service cuts. that's hard to do in these times." freeman is also disappointed that the council will discuss the budget on monday night, june 28. a balanced city budget is required by law to be approved by july 1. that leaves precious little time to make any major changes, freeman said. the late date was necessitated because benest, who recently announced he was undergoing cancer treatment, believed he would be undergoing surgery on june 14, when the budget was originally scheduled to be discussed. "unforeseen circumstances happen, but i'm still concerned about the timing, " freeman said. staff writer bill d'agostino can be e-mailed at bdagostino paweekly . mary frances callan said a calendar would not be adopted until late in the year, when both sets of negotiations are completed. she said parents in turn would not be given the usual year's notice on the calendar. marilyn cook, district assistant superintendent who headed the calendar committee, said nearly 500 emails and phone calls on the topic reached the district. the responses, however, didn't point in one clear direction. they were scattered, which created a problem for the calendar committee, cook said. "it's not that we didn't honor all of the input. a calendar is a huge compromise, " she added. some parents were simply upset with the district's process of drafting the calendar. "i was never aware of parent input being actively solicited, " said diane frank, a parent of a middle school student. staff writer alexandria rocha can be e-mailed at arocha paweekly.

By donald kaul by jim hightower trying to bring common sense to washington, d.c., is about as hard as delivering a tray of ice cubes to hellbut a group called business leaders for sensible priorities is trying to do just that. even wilder, this group of business people, military experts, and grassroots activists are trying to make sense of something as nonsensical as the bloated, obese, inefficient, antiquated, sugaraddicted bureaucratic jumble known as the pentagon budget. their goal is to take a slim slice of this overweight budget . and apply the money to some of our country's broader security needs. next year, the pentagon will take 3 billion of our tax dollarsmore than will be appropriated for the environment, education, energy, agriculture, housing, job training, poverty needs, science, national parks and every other federal program combined. also, the pentagon's haul does not include fighting a war. war is extra! for example, the 3 billion for bush's war of lies in iraq is all off budgethe's putting that on the credit cards of our kids and grandkids. so, the sensible priorities group wants to trim a mere billion in fat, pork, and pure lard that now goes to the likes of boeing, lockheed and halliburton for weaponry boondoggles that don't work or aren't needed. this would not take a dime from our troops in bush's warand it still would leave the pentagon brass with more money than the rest of the world combined spends on their militaries. with this billion slice, we could provide head start for every child in america, guarantee health care for every child, rebuild every single american school, establish energy independence for our country through renewable fuels. and so much more. of course we need a strong militarybut fat is not strong! we need a pentagon that defends us. not one that bleeds us. to support sensible priorities, call: 212-243-3416. jim hightower is the best-selling author of thieves in high places: they've stolen our country and it's time to take it back, on sale now from viking press. jimhightower . distributed by minutemanmedia . the best thing about the end of the christmas season is that we don't have to hear "the little drummer boy" again for a whole year. would that someone had given that irritating little twerp an accordion for his birthday instead of that damn drum. ; the worse thing is that it marks the end of getting and giving gifts, having family feasts, going to parties where you get to kiss strangers under the mistletoe and generally have a good time. of the year when the sun halts its retreat from the sky in the northern hemisphere, to begin advancing again. for all of recorded history it has been a time of celebration for the human race. as far as we know, cavemen in the northern hemisphere celebrated around dec. 25, hundreds of thousands of years before christ. apparently, as cavemen and cavewomen watched the sun get lower and lower on the horizon and the days get shorter, they would start to get nervous. they feared the sun was leaving for good. on what amounted to dec. 22 or thereabouts, however, it would stop disappearing and on the 25th, if there had been a 25th ; it would become obvious that the sun was rising in the sky again. naturally, this cheered up the cave people considerably so they threw a party. eventually they ritualized it as a festival of lights. to symbolize the return of the sun; get it? ; this festival continued in many northern lands throughout the centuries. hanukkah, for example, is among other things a festival of lights. it is also connected to what jewish scriptures say is an historical event and a small miracle, but that's another story. ; the greeks celebrated the festival of poseidon at about the christmas season. by this time they'd wisely added drinking, eating and gift giving to the proceedings. the romans improved upon that with the saturnalia, which was like mardi gras without the inhibitions. it was another solstice festival. you are free to think, i suppose, that christians arrived at the timing of christmas by coincidence but you don't want to go into a video poker tutor game with that attitude. no, christmas is a winter solstice celebration, like all the rest of the festivals of that seasonthink christmas tree lightsand it's perfectly fine for jews, muslims, hindus, kwanzaanians and misanthropes like me to celebrate it in our own fashion. i prefer expensive gifts, but that's me. some people like homemade stuff, others to join hands and sing. it's all fine. takes all kinds. i should also point out that, from an american standpoint, it is the engine that keeps our economy running. we are no longer a nation of producers or workers. we are a nation of consumers. we buy, therefore we are. and we do an enormous share of our buying during the christmas season. those who rail against the "commercialization" of christmas are anti-capitalism. there is no harsher criticism one american can make of another. before closing, i should confess that part of my enthusiasm for christmas derives from the fact i was born on dec. 25. it is my birthday. i wouldn't draw any undue inference from that, however. it is probably a coincidence. ; don kaul is a two-time pulitzer prize-losing washington correspondent who, by his own account, is right more than he's wrong. email: donald.kaul2 verizon . distributed by minutemanmedia.

| Universities are strange and dichotomous places. some people see college professors as valued purveyors of knowledge, while others see them as stuffed shirts and elitists of the highest order. similarly, a college student might be a child of privilege frittering away his parents' money, a hardworking youth trying desperately to graduate before his student loans mount too high or an athlete coasting through on his way to the big leagues. all of these stereotypes exist to one degree or another at any given university. even the institutions themselves change over time, and a school's reputation might outlive the truth by decades. whatever a college's present state, all institutions of higher learning have secrets. sometimes these hidden realities are nothing more than a professor's affair with a student or an unsolved murder committed in a dorm room. the older a university is, however, the more likely that it houses secrets of a more esoteric nature. in the world of darkness, universities may conceal supernatural beings. some could feed on the student body while others might lurk with their own bizarre motives in darkened hallways. our school is more than a home to the unknown. it's a mystery in itself, possessed of a bit of sentience and a bare glimmer of an agenda, as evidenced by the strange events that dog those who work, live and study there and ladbrokes poker or video poker tutor.
Measure of self-reported sedentary behaviour that produced interesting results. however, we are not able to give context to the meaning of the sedentary behaviour. although physically sedentary, children could be mentally active school-work at home, etc ; . in support of this, note in table 2 that time spent in sedentary activity correlated negatively with quality of life, but had no association with time spent on physical activity or school attendance. future studies will need to further sample the activities children are engaged in when sedentary. second, we found little support for the role of parental context on child behaviour. this may be due to inadequate measurement. conversely, it may be that the effects of parental solicitousness are only important in clinical populations, and there should be a focus on variables more relevant to the active normally functioning child such as peer solicitousness. third, for some measures, because of the distribution of the data, we created dichotomous variables from continuous scales i.e., school attendance, level of engagement on physical activities, and functional disability ; . although a necessary manoeuvre it may have created a considerable loss of information and statistical power leading to an inflated risk of type ii error. finally, our conceptualisation of function was pragmatic and based on available instruments. some aspects of function went unsampled. for example, we measured school presence but not academic performance, sport engagement but not enjoyment, parental influence but not peer influence. for a truly comprehensive and integrative approach we may have to invoke multiple levels of measurement and units of analysis e.g., individual, dyad, family, group ; palermo and chambers, 2005 ; . this study adopted exploratory methods where variables were examined without specific hypotheses. we suggest a number of avenues of further investigation. new approaches to model-based analysis based on the available results are needed because understanding how children experience everyday pain, and the relationship between everyday pain and functioning, are crucially important to the prevention of chronic pain and disability. these data highlight the potential protective function of psychosocial variables such as positive self-regard, the lack of a strong belief in the disabling consequences of pain, and a non-fearful interpretation of pain. interestingly, these data also raise questions about the role of other variables such as sex, physical fitness including bmi ; and social and economic status. finally, a focus on positive outcomes such as acceptance of pain and social engagement, and a focus on positive psychological variables, such as adaptive coping and pain fearlessness, are unchartered territory in pediatric pain. we need to develop a theoretical understanding and a predictive model to explain why most children who commonly experience pain do not develop chronic distress and disability. such a model will require not only the measurement of key variables and relationships previously missing from the literature, but also an explicit focus on the development of beliefs about, and behaviour in response to, everyday pain.

In the earliest days of alpha complex, the computer established a few harmless secret societies to channel citizens' conspiratorial instincts in approved ways. these societies, though heavily infiltrated by internal security, quickly became uncontrollable and spawned pernicious offshoots. the intolerable lack of privacy and the computer's stultifying omnipresence bred, and still breeds, conspiracy. today virtually every citizen, it seems, belongs to one secret society or another, each meeting surreptitiously. because the computer no longer controls most of these secret societies, and they encourage loyalties other than to the computer, it now views them with the greatest suspicion. membership in a secret society is ipso facto treason. the computer has varying degrees of influence and control over the societies, and some societies may exist of which the computer is completely unaware. as the computer discovers a new society's existence, it makes great efforts to infiltrate it with loyal citizens and gather information on its goals. society beliefs and objectives vary wildly. some actually promote obedience to the computer, so it silently tolerates membership in these societies, especially for citizens of otherwise proven merit and loyalty, some societies have goals entirely irrelevant to the computer's wishes; some even wish to destroy it. the computer tolerates membership in such societies not one bit. remember, highly-placed agents of a secret society may have access to the computer's programs, and a secret society may have planted in the computer certain programs dedicated to aiding that society. similarly, a secret society might obtain information for a character that would not normally be available at his security clearance. some societies even have contacts outside alpha complex. before each mission, take each player aside and privately give him any information or directives his character's secret society wishes him to have during the mission. these should include the society's suspicions about other characters on the mission, tasks the society would like the character to perform during the mission, and any information about the mission the society feels might be important. at the same time, the character may request information or equipment from his society. grant or deny these requests according to the society's resources, the difficulty of granting the request, the expenditure of ious, and how you feel that day and poker card games.
Aspects are close, then the lord of the ascendant is also the ruling planet, for he will exercise the most potent influence in the life. on the other hand if another planet is more highly elevated than the ruler of the ascendant, if it is exalted, essentially dignified or placed in an angle and its aspects re more plentiful or closer than the aspects of the lord of the ascendant, the judge that that planet will be the ruler of the horoscope and exercise a dominant influence in the life regardless of the fact that it is not the ruler of the rising sign. but if there are two planets running neck-and-neck in the race for rulership, so to speak, with no strongly marked difference in favor of one or the other so that it is difficult to make a choice, do not utterly discard one and choose the other, for then they will both be very active in the life and must be classed as co-rulers.

23 october 2004 this function for many of us was probably a first, and i guess typical of a uniquely australian outback fundraising activity that you will only find in this wide brown land of ours!. take the bands for starters, in excess 20 bands in attendance, most of whom had paid their own way to be at the event, and many of whom had travelled many kilometres to be there. on top of this, most offered their talents free of charge. then there was the organisation of drink and tucker for the huge number of visitors, despite the fact that many had their caravans all set up on site, with all on board!. the setting up also included toilet facilities, which were excellent, the p a system for the country music show which went for two nights, going for 12 hours non stop on the saturday!. one could go on and on, as the list is endless! a good number of club members attended, and indeed made the trip in their historic vehicles, ranging from the early 20's to the late 50's. no doubt in my mind, that the star of the historic vehicles on show was dick and judy's harts 1947 fargo prime mover and the highway palace, the 6 ton van restored by dick and his merry men over a period of some ten years. this is a superb restoration, and judy is more than happy to show you some of its many features, and is justly proud of the completed unit. most importantly, the country music campout was organised to raise funds for the rfds, hence the comment about bands and sponsors providing their goods and services for free. dick and judy hart opened the palace to the public for inspection for a gold coin donation, all of which went to the rfds as well. despite the dust and the flies, i sure a future event such as this one will be well patronised again. hats off to the committee, which included kevin frith from this club ; , the sponsors, the station owners who opened up their property to allow this event to take place. most of all, the artists and their support bands must be thanked for the entertainment which made it all so successful and poker guide.
Cultural meanings seem natural, normal, inherently human - us women find the notion of polygyny obviously, naturally wrong - koryak women of siberia also shiite women of iraq, some mormon women of utah, etc. ; find requiring only monogamy is obviously, naturally wrong - each would think the other was incomprehensible, maybe deluded - anthropology tries to expose these assumptions of naturalness or normalcy for what they are: unconsidered, incorrect interpretations of aspects of one's own culture, since these aspects are actually arbitrary, not part of human nature - as in kluckhohn's example of native americans of the same clan being repelled at the idea of physical contact, just as euro-american brothers and sisters would be - "equally nonrational responses, culturally standardized unreason" p. 8 - kluckhohn points out that culture is not a force - it is an abstraction for the convenience of discussion - culture doesn't assign meanings; people do - culture does not do things; people do - be careful not to "reify" - "to regard an abstraction as a material thing" - ex: "democracy is on the march" - ex: "we will defeat terror" - society vs. culture - society "group of people who interact more with each other than they do with other individuals" p. 9 - culture "the distinctive ways of life of such a group" p. 9 - culture is not always biologically adaptive - kluckhohn suggests usually due to holding over from earlier adaptation p. 11 - two kinds of explanations or functions, or purposes ; of behaviors - manifest function obvious, immediate one ; - vs. latent function such things as maintaining prestige - often at odds with simple "adaptation" ; - ideal culture: how people tell you things work, the "official" version, the way things are supposed to be - real culture: what an observer would actually see happening - comment on the language and assumptions of kluckhohn's article - written in 1949, hence the wwii references - some aspects of the language are dated and no longer acceptable in current writing - but we forgive them here because at the time, they were standard - "primitive tribes" p. 10 - background - we react not to things, but the meanings we put on them - your response to someone who gets out of a new bmw, vs. someone who gets out of an old toyota corolla - peruvian adults riding "stingray" bicycles with high handlebars and banana seats - they don't assign the same meanings to them that we would.

An i o record is a collection of data items, called fields, that are logically related and are processed as a unit. the record type refers to the convention for storing fields in records. the record type of the data within a file is not maintained as an attribute of the file. the results of using a record type other than the one used to create the file are indeterminate. if you omit fpscomp: ioformat during compilation, the following six record types are available: record type fixed-length variablelength segmented available file organizations and portability considerations relative or sequential file organizations. sequential file organization only. the variable-length record type is generally the most portable record type across multivendor platforms. sequential file organization only and only for unformatted sequential access. the segmented record type is unique to compaq fortran and should not be used for portability with programs written in languages other than fortran or for places where compaq fortran is not used. however, because the segmented record type is unique to compaq fortran products, formatted data in segmented files can be ported across compaq fortran platforms. sequential file organization only.

It's been a very exciting year watching our b'nai mitzvah class work together it continues to be a year of commitment and challenges, both by our families and students alike. our students show how dedicated they are to their studies and to each other, and how proud they are to be jews. their progress has been amazing to watch. each student has actively engaged in tikun olam by completing mitzvah projects during the year. each student learns a deeper sense of what it means to work as a community, as they brainstorm ideas together about how to improve our environment, reach out to seniors and children in the community and so much more. we participated with a group called the achilles track club. they assist persons with disabilities in their fitness regime, secure needed equipment for them, and provide support. our kids went to the beach in santa monica, where the track club meets every sunday, and worked with a blind teenage girl, an older gentleman with one-sided paralysis, and a paraplegic man in a wheelchair. our kids had the opportunity to either assist or accompany them on their fitness routine, and learn all about living with their particular disability. in march, we performed at the jewish home for the aging. we sang songs, read poetry inspired by our experience at the achilles track club, and many of the kids played their individual instruments. we are preparing for the kabbalat shabbat on may 21st where we will lead the services and share our mitzvah experiences this year. it has been an amazing experience for all of us, and we feel very proud of this class of b'nai mitzvah students. we are already planning another fabulous year for the next class. as this year comes to an end, i want to personally thank michal marks and janet ettenger for their enthusiastic dedication and love for our children. we all owe them our heartfelt thanks. mazel tov to our b'nai mitzvah class of 2003 2004: dylan heller, simon ettenger, dylan schwartz, seth rubinroit, danielle ayal, eric grossman, alex greenberg, rebecca nassimi, seth kaplan, devin glass, reed kaplan, zack lichstein, claire snider, abby snider, rebecca gray, alexa glazer, jake wisnicki, max scott, megan helfand and montana clunies-ross. may the stories of our people be upon your heart and the grace of the torah rhythm dance in your soul. b'shalom, cantor marcelo.
