Well kids, as this year comes to a close, so does my time in office. it's a bit bittersweet because while i've had a great time running the band this year, i'll be relieved to have responsibility for the band resting on steve's shoulders. i'm sure he'll do a great job next year. just because the school year is almost over, however, that doesn't mean the social activities stop! a bunch of us permanently live in san diego these days and we'll definitely be getting together often this summer. gabe will soon be moving into the casa de annette y ian, which means there will definitely be things happening involving pepbanders this summer, and everyone is invited and encouraged to come over. additionally, keep your eyes on chat because we'll be having our annual mission bay bbq which was quite a success last year thanks to the hard work done by allison ; sometime in july or august. for those of you who are still going to be in town this summer and would like to find a group to play with, a friend of mine is the assistant director of a brand new community band in del mar, and they are always looking for more players. for those of you going home, moving, or leaving the country this summer, we will miss you, and look forward to seeing everyone in september. however, two faces we've come to love in the band, but won't be seeing next year are debbie and steve mcdowell. debbie will be bidding us "auf wiedersehen" this august as she sets off for a year in germany, and steve is heading back up to norcal well, reno, nevada, but it's so close to norcal that they're consider practically connected ; because he's been asked to stay on with his lab's staff as they relocate up north. debbie and steve, we will miss you both. don't forget, though, we all like to take road trips, and all of our friends are only a drive away or plane ride, as debbie's case may be ; . have a great summer everyone! and please, so that we can all stay in touch, go ahead and e-mail your summer contact info. to me at: agriesha alumni.ucsd . i'll put together a list in a few weeks and send it out to everyone that wants a copy. thanks again for making this year definitely a memorable one. it's been fun being an officer, we had an absolutely awesome group leading the band this year, and i look forward to next year. congratulations and good luck to all of our new leaders. you will all be brilliant i sure. -annette. In 2000, for the first time, exports topped 6 million acre-feet. environmentalists have said there is a clear pattern of increasing exports and decreasing fish populations. smelt this year plummeted to record lows. in court documents filed earlier this month, steve thompson, a regional manager for fish and wildlife, acknowledged those trends but said there's not enough evidence to say the numbers are more than "circumstantial." the role that the pumps play in the fish decline is poorly understood, he said. officials have pointed to other factors, such as invasive species gobbling up the food that smelt need and toxins that spill into delta waters. thompson did say that returning to export levels seen in the late 1990s would be appropriate until the new reports are done. the government's proposal would reduce, but not eliminate, reverse flows in old and middle rivers at certain times of year. those rivers flow backward when the pumps are operating, sucking in fish from the south delta. environmentalists have said they want reverse flows eliminated. "you've got to move water from northern california to southern california, " said jerry johns, deputy director of the state department of water resources.
