By penny wilhelm "three studies of figures on beds" is an intriguing work by frances bacon in an exhibit full of his provocative paintings, open until 18 january at the kunsthistorisches museum. this large scale triptych describes a sexual relationship between the artist himself, francis bacon, and a male lover. it is the opinion of this critic that the differences in each of the tree panels of the triptych suggest the development of bacon's relationship and give insights into the nature of the development. reading the panels from left to right, the objects in the background change from painting to painting, as do the positions of the beds and the light intensity. this can imply either a passing of time and or changes in the relationship of the two figures. the composition is similar but varied in all three panels. for example, in the left-most panel, the bed is centered, vertical and slightly angled, with a spare background. in the middle panel, a different bed is placed horizontally, and the background contains more furniture. in the right panel, the bed is recognizable as that of the left panel, also placed vertically, again with little furniture, but it inclines to the right. a light bulb hangs into each composition, and, reading the triptych from left to right, the intensity of the light changes, which indicates a passing of time. a circle is represented in all three panels. moving from left to right, it starts as a thin, black line, winding clockwise and ending with an arrow's head. it functions as a magnifying glass, distorting colour and the figures within its spiral. the circle in the middle panel is not constant but is broken into and video poker strategy or poker party. Frequency of the alpha rhythm the spectrum of the resting electroencephalogram eeg; i.e., the graph of the relative amount of brain wave activity at each frequency from, say, 0.1 hz to 20.0 hz ; is rather like a fingerprint in that its shape varies from person to person but is quite constant for the same person over time. in two experiments lykken, tellegen, & thorkelson, 1974; lykken et al., 1982 ; we obtained eeg spectra from a total of 147 pairs of adult mz twins and 53 pairs of dzs. we analyzed each spectrum into its five main components: the amount of eeg activity in the four classical eeg frequency bands, called delta, theta, alpha, and beta: and the midfrequency of the alpha component, a parameter that we called phi. then we computed the within-pair correlations for each of these parameters. the mz twins correlated about .80 for all five, and the dz correlations averaged .40 for the first four parameters, as would be expected with polygenic-additive variables. but the dz correlation for phi was .13, only about one sixth rather than half of the mz value. the midfrequency of the alpha rhythm, because it is so weakly correlated in dz co-twins, is unlikely to be strongly correlated among first-degree relatives generally. yet, because the mz correlation is very high even among mza twins see table l ; , phi must be strongly genetic, even though it does not tend to run in families.' this is interesting because, although no one knows exactly how the alpha frequency is determined biologically, it probably involves some sort of resonance phenomenon e.g., fedotchev, bonda, & konovalov, 1990 ; . resonance is a classic example of a non-additive configural phenomenon. in electronics, for example, the resonant frequency of a circuit is a function of the product of inductance and capacitance. the pitch and timbre of the human voice is determined by the resonant characteristics of the vocal apparatus, the shape and musculature of the vocal chords, the glottis, the hard palate, the nasopharynx, and so on. the properties of each of these components are genetically, and largely independently, determined. for this reason mz twins, whether reared together or apart, have very similar voices and can easily substitute for one another on the telephone. in her review of the mza literature, farber 198 1 ; said, "the pitch, tone, and overall characteristics of the twins' voices were so stunningly alike that almost all investigators made mention of the similarity" p. 85 ; . ordinary siblings.

School teachers say that too, but i think again that if it is put in the right environment. we have high school students here. if they hang around long enough, they sort of learn the difference between the competition aspect of it and what the actual performance is, what you are trying to do. really, in theatresports, the competition is between the teams. it is a way of galvanizing the teams with the audience against the judges who are really the bad guys. they are the ones who squelch all the fun or get you off stage when you need it but that's the good stuff. i don't really know much about competition. i have limited experience with things like leagues and fresh competition with comedy sports i have very little experience with those to say there is a philosophical basis for what they are doing in terms of how the competition plays into it. the problem in theatresports is that as soon as people get hold of the format, they immediately want to change it, to make it less risky. so they will do things like take out the lines that are boring, which is a huge mistake because again you want to cut down on humiliation. that's a mistake because humiliation is standing on stage when it is all going wrong and having no way off and poker stars.
