O what shall we do with the funny little things? roast 'em alive, or stew them in a pot; fry them, boil them and eat them hot?" then they stopped and shouted out: "fly away little birds! fly away if you can! come down little birds, or you will get roasted in your nests! sing, sing little birds! why don't you sing?" "go away! little boys!" shouted gandalf in answer. "it isn't bird-nesting time. also naughty little boys that play with fire get punished." he said it to make them angry, and to show them he was not frightened of them-though of course he was, wizard though he was. but they took no notice, and they went on singing. "burn, burn tree and fern! shrivel and scorch! a fizzling torch to light the night for our delight, ya hey! bake and toast 'em, fry and roast 'em till beards blaze, and eyes glaze; till hair smells and skins crack, fat melts, and bones black in cinders lie beneath the sky! so dwarves shall die, and light the night for our delight, ya hey! ya-harri-heyl ya hoy!" and with that ya hoy! the flames were under gandalf's tree. in a moment it spread to the others. the bark caught fire, the lower branches cracked. then gandalf climbed to the top of his tree. the sudden splendour flashed from his wand like lightning, as he got ready to spring down from on high right among the spears of the goblins. that would have been the end of him, though he would probably have killed many of them as he came hurtling down like a thunderbolt. but he never leaped. just at that moment the lord of the eagles swept down from above, seized him in his talons, and was gone. there was a howl of anger and surprise from the goblins. loud cried the lord of the eagles, to whom gandalf had now spoken. back swept the great birds that were with him, and down they came like huge black shadows. the wolves yammered and gnashed their teeth; the goblins yelled and stamped with rage, and flung their heavy spears in the air in vain. over them swooped the eagles; the dark rush of their beating wings smote them to the floor or drove them far away; their talons tore at goblin faces. other birds flew to the tree-tops and seized the dwarves, who were scrambling up now as far as ever they dared to go. poor little bilbo was very nearly left behind again! he just managed to catch hold of dori's legs, as dori was borne off last of all; and they went together above the tumult and the burning, bilbo swinging in the air with his arms nearly breaking. now far below the goblins and the wolves were scattering far and wide in the woods. a few eagles were still circling and sweeping above the battleground. the flames about the trees sprang suddenly up above the highest branches. they went up in crackling fire. there was a sudden flurry of sparks and smoke. bilbo had escaped only just in time! soon the light of the burning was faint below, a red twinkle on the black floor; and they were high up in the sky, rising all the time in strong sweeping circles. bilbo never forgot that flight, clinging onto dori's ankles.

I remember my days as a young aviator yes, airplanes were made of metal even back then ; trying to break into the professional pilot world. whenever i sent my resume to a chief pilot, or after an interview for a pilot job, the answer was always "not enough pilot time". i could not get a good pilot job because i lacked experience, but i could not see how to gain that experience without first getting the job. this was truly a dilemma. of course, i considered myself as good as or better than ; all the "old heads" getting the plum jobs. i was younger, smarter, better trained, and had better eyesight and reactions than all those guys and gals ; in their forties. why did they get preference because they had more time? now that i one of those "old guys", i understand the reasoning behind the criteria applied to me by flight departments when i was younger. flight time in the log book of a pilot still living usually means that he or she has survived unexpected events during flight, and from that experience learned valuable lessons. survival after all that time usually also means that the pilot has been able to apply those lessons under different circumstances in the real world. some of those lessons certainly came accompanied by fear. typically, we should avoid situations that cause that uneasy sensation in the pit of our stomach. but when that time has past, and we find ourselves in potential trouble, being able to stay calm while things are unraveling around us is a favorable trait for.
Had written, they knew what montesquieu had written, they knew what john locke had written. those men had written that you can have a government that treats individuals individually, that respects individual rights. putting this into practice is the great contribution america has made to civilization. at jefferson's house, somebody bought me a copy of the u.s. constitution, and i stuck it in my pocket so that i could read it from time to time, because there are parts of it that i don't know. i happened to have it in my pocket, facing out, when i was in las vegas and about to play on how to play poker with some serious looking fellows. you know the type--the men who retire and have nothing to do but play poker every morning, so they know all the moves and they take it seriously. one tough guy sitting next to me suddenly noticed the booklet in my pocket and said, "what the hell is that?" i said, "oh, that's the u.s. constitution. are you for it?" he hesitated for a minute, and then he said, "yeah, i am, actually." this incident inspired me. i bought a number of these copies of the constitution and brought them with me. i'm going to leave them up here for anybody who wants one, but i going to make a deal with you first: if you take one of these copies of the constitution, you have to carry it around with you. put it as close to your heart as you can, because the truth is that for the last twentyfive hundred years, whenever the ruler said, "i'm sorry, we're going to suspend all those rights, " it was the lawyers who came marching out one after the other to resist the ruler--sometimes at enormous personal cost. and the end result has been that america has flourished, with freedom of thought and freedom of religion. let a person be whoever or whatever he chooses to be and to play poker texas or on how to play poker.

That resonates with the way in which individuals, including the main buffy characters, interact with the order of things. this occurs in the "safe" context of modally marked fantasy and its concomitant moral occult. the metaphysicalized determinism of the game accrues for the player a direct and heightened experience of being acted upon. as such the game is carefully designed and authored to exploit the frustrations and pleasures around living up to the buffy myth as well as lending the act of playing the game greater meaning and resonance. [26] players are offered the challenge to defeat the technologically-based big bad aided by the game's occulted infrastructure if achieved a pleasurable sense of mastery may be accrued that reinforces the illusion of personal autonomy. yet this can only be achieved by following the set pathway and fulfilling the quests designated by the game the game's linear nature gives little scope for so-called emergent gameplay that would transgress the intentions of the game designers ; . the contract drawn up between hands-on interaction of playing buffy and hands-off pre-determinism inherent within the game's infrastructure, operates, therefore, with the emotional economics of being acted upon, as much as with the drive to act, colonize, and take charge of the slayer and her power. the dialectical switching between the two intensifies the experience of both restriction and autonomy, a strategy that neatly dovetails with and augments one of the show's primary themes. the remediation of buffy into game form adds a media-specific interactive dimension, but the game's inherent moral occult operates to meld the world created by the game into the broader meta-textual buffverse, which, despite being a hi-tech media phenomenon, has many of the transcendent attributes of the creation myth. sources aarseth, espen. cybertext: perspectives on ergodic literature. baltimore: john hopkins u p, 1997. bolter, jay david and richard grusin. remediation: understanding new media. cambridge massachusetts london: mit press, 2000. brooks, peter. the melodramatic imagination: balzac, henry james, melodrama and the mode of excess. new haven and london: yale u p, 1995. carr, diane. Chap. maj. ; milton johnson family life chaplain selfless service what it is, a biblical example of it, and what it looks like in today's world, selfless service selfless service involves putting oneself in others! it includes service which is performed without any expectation of result or award for the person performing it. selfless service is not just an attitude - it is a lifestyle. i read an article recently entitled "selfless service" in which the author suggested that to become selfless one has to engage in service, and the more a person becomes selfless the more he she enjoys serving others. to serve, you must give up your "self" - resist the natural tendency to focus on self-serving desires, and place the concerns of others first. a biblical example interestingly, the bible records a beautiful story of a lady who demonstrated selfless service one day when she was asked to put the request of someone else before that of herself and her son in spite of their immediate need and desperate situation. the story is found in 1 kings 17: 715. the woman is called "the widow at zarephath". the bible states that there had been a drought in the country where she lived and as a result food supply was seriously affected. this woman decided to gather whatever food items she could find to prepare a final meal for her and her son when a prophet by the name of elijah asked her to give him a drink of water. when she attempted to do so, he then asked please give me some food too. at this request the widow explained her situation and said i have only enough for my son and i to eat before we die. elijah then said, feed me first and you will have enough food to last until god sends rain again. to her credit, she did as he asked. without hesitation she gave the prophet what she had though she needed it ; and trusted god to take care of her. elijah ate, and to the widow's amazement her resources were stretched beyond imagination. what a display of selfless service! perhaps these words are true - our unselfish and compassionate acts will not only help others, but will also help to broaden us as well. one who picks a flower for an offering is the first to enjoy its fragrance and beauty. likewise, it is our own self that is awakened through our selfless acts. selfless service today needless to say, the best display of selfless service is seen in what america's heroes are doing today in iraq, afghanistan, korea, europe, and many other places around the world in defense of this country and support of the freedom of our allies. to leave family, friends, homeland, and culture to help others is indeed selfless. the old saying that there is no place like home is true there is no place like home! and i dare say that every deployed person would love to be home right now. however, duty calls for a sacrifice to put others first and they are answering the call with unbelievable courage. listen to the words of a poem about selfless service that i love: day after day they ask me "why do you go away? what makes you leave your family? i think that you should stay." my child who's standing at the door clutching daddy's hand so pleads again with choking voice "mommy, please don't go." for me, i must answer them, i need for them to know. it is not for fame or glory or riches that i go. i go for each of you, for all that have a son, for all that have a daughter or a special loved one. i go that when they hurt, someone will be there for them, to ease them as they sleep i go to hold them as they die, in some deserted place and still their troubled face. i go because you cannot go and hold them when in fear and soothe the troubled brow as they cry for home so dear and play poker superstars.

Churchill and the chiefs of staff not to send uncamouflaged decrypts to the soviets `in view of the insecurity of their cyphers.'6 the intercepts were prefixed `bj-' and referred to in some files as `black jumbos.'7 by saturday afternoon, june 28, when he drove down to chequers again, the raw ultra intercepts which churchill was receiving in special, buffcoloured locked boxes, indicated that hitler was not having everything his own way.8 the wehrmacht was evidently dismayed by the sheer size and number of the soviet tanks.`it now appears on the highest authority, ' churchill informed lord beaverbrook, minister of supply, using one of his characteristic euphemisms for the decodes, `that the russians have produced a very large tank, said to be over seventy tons, against which the german a t [anti-tank] six-pounder has proved useless.'9 for a few days churchill floundered. the british commanders-in-chief in the far east and china asked how far britain's co-operation with moscow would extend. churchill authorised his chiefs of staff to reply that it would not extend to a military alliance britain planned to assist indirectly, by heavy air raids on germany. when sir stafford cripps, his unhappy ambassador in moscow, saw stalin's foreign minister on the twenty-seventh, vyacheslav molotov inquired whether britain was willing to sign a political agreement. cripps replied that britain contemplated no political agreement `at this stage.' `it is better to wait, ' he advised molotov, `until we have learnt to trust each other.' churchill's first instinct was to strike somewhere, anywhere, on the continent. one suggestion that he had dictated on the day after hitler's invasion of russia was for r.a.f. bombers to set the black forest on fire. the soviet ambassador maisky suggested that he raid the pas de calais, the part of the french coastline nearest to england, with thirty thousand troops made up of commandos and a canadian division. churchill approved.`make hell while the sun shines, ' he suggested, believing despite all the lessons of gallipoli and norway that troops needed only to be ferried to a hostile beach for them to fight their way triumphantly ashore.10 he travelled up to scotland on june 26 taking admiral of the fleet sir roger keyes, director of combined operations, with him. `i can't tell you what we saw, ' wrote his private secretary after their return to chequers, `except one picturesque incident when a pipe band led the p.m. through the streets of the town past the cheering populace.'11 with keyes, his world war one friend, now aged seventy, at his side, he watched improvised land and Google.
