An excellent scandinavian documentary from 1993, running 47 minutes, provides a biographical portrait of the great composer, nino rota note--rota's marvelous comic opera, il cappello di paglia di firenze, has finally been released on cd ; . child prodigy, rota began composing at an early age and wrote a number of `classical' works before discovering a steady income through his composition of film cores. although not systematic, the program does a very good job at sketching the essentials of rota's ife and career, and it discusses in a bemused manner his habit of lifting his previous compositions and e-using them again and again with different orchestrations. he was a bit absentminded, and it is said hat he could fall asleep at the piano and continue to play. a forehead slapping revelation--one of his hemes in la dolce vita was lifted from our other favorite composer, kurt weill. in any case, rota is one of the great composers of the twentieth century and someday more people are going to realize it. we just wish some american opera company would get smart enough to put on his operas. finally, there is a 1969 film, running 51 minutes, which was made by fellini himself, for nbc no ess, entitled fellini a director's notebook. essentially a grab bag of leftover materials, it was put together while fellini was working on satyricon, but is most reminiscent of roma and perhaps represents that film's germination ; , being a collection of loosely related short pieces. included are the deleted footage rom nights of cabiria oct 99 a tribute to italian silent films; a visit with mastroianni on the set of another film; a look at an enormous set that was abandoned when fellini ran into a severe case of writer's block after 8; casting of laborers with distinctive `roman' faces for satyricon; and sketches of rome in the past and the present. you could say it's fellini's magical mystery tour. it's not a great work, but it is still compelling, because of his involvement. the three-part anthology of edgar allan poe tales, spirits of the dead, which includes a marvelous segment by fellini, has been released by home vision entertainment spi120, ; . the 1969 feaure was released previously by image entertainment jun 98 ; , but fans can toss that version out, because the home vision release is vastly improved. the older dvd had very faded colors and was uzzy, while home vision's release looks fresh and crisp. there are still a few stray scratches and not every frame is immaculate, but for the most part, the presentation is terrific. the greatest beneficiary of the improved color transfer is the fun but hokey opening sequence hat was directed by roger vadim. it has lots of sex and period costumes, and the clean, smooth image ubstantially improves fleshtones and textures, which are its greatest selling points. jane fonda porrays the mistress in a castle who falls for a lowly worker, played by peter fonda. the worker is killed, but is apparently reincarnated as a horse that the mistress then enjoys riding a lot. it's dumb, but it ooks so good and is executed so flamboyantly that you don't mind. the second segment, directed by louis malle and starring alain delon and brigitte bardot, is a more literal story, about a man tormented by his morally superior doppelganger. it is well executed and he most immediately accessible tale in the group. again, the image is immaculate and fleshtones look uper, but being more traditional and systematic in its narrative execution, the piece has less to offer on multiple viewing than the more artistically inclined vadim and fellini pieces. fellini's segment, with terence stamp as a drunken actor attending an awards ceremony in rome and then driving around madly at night in a sports car, is the least improved. it still looks much better than the older dvd, and at times the color transfer is solid, but at other times the hues still look pale and the image seems overly grainy. nevertheless, the piece is hypnotically captivating--especially with the assistance of rota's music. the picture is presented in letterboxed format only, with an aspect ratio of about 1.78: 1 and an accommodation for enhanced 16: 9 playback. the film is in french fonda does her own dubbing ; , with optional english subtitles. the effective opening menu allows you the choice of playing any of the three parts, or all of them. belmondo vehicle jean-paul belmondo stars as a covert operative who has returned to paris to haunt his former uperiors after they abandoned him to politics in le professionnel, a studio canal image entertainment release id0666srdvd, ; . the 1981 production is a good vehicle for belmondo, whose.Oh well, chip hot poker chips at least i gave it a shot and poker bonuses or hot poker. |
