On april 12 i attended the meeting of the alabama cave survey. after the meeting bobby dodson invited me to lunch and later was going to show me some cave entrances for future reference. we set out in a caravan on the way to a restaurant that bobby had in mind. some thought that we were just gong down the road, but when they realized we were headed to the oneonta i-59 exit they turned back. bobby dodson, avis van swearingen, julie schenck, gerald moni, jerry reevesaka "rockeater" and myself ate at a small b a r restaurant. we chatted and discussed the possibility of going caving in mexico. after eating, bobby dodson showed us the cave entrance. i hadn't planned on caving since bobby was going to show me another entrance that he had wanted to show andy zerbe, however, i had some new vertical gear that i wanted to try out and the others had invited me along. the entrance is only about 50 ft. from the roadway. it is a pit about 22 feet deep. there is a thick vine that runs from a tree to the bottom of the pit. it seems that the locals use it to enter the cave and party down there. the temperature was in the 70s, and i was getting warm wearing my cave coveralls. each of us descended into the pit and entered a chamber with tall ceilings. aside from a few easy crawls the cave is mostly walking passage. for me the cave was warm and rather humid. we went left through an easy crawl to some other rooms and the passages came to a dead end. next we went back to the main entrance chamber and took the right passage. the cave sloped downward and we followed a stream passage in high water. gerald moni pointed to the ceiling and remarked that he could see swirled patterns on it, which means that this cave totally floods. fortunately the forecast was for no rain. the cave is also muddy. the trail sometimes traverses a slope with footsteps carved by previous cavers who had walked there. it while the others followed the stream for about 200 feet. everyone made it back up, but it was not easy. to get up for some meant hugging the mud. but as scott fee, our president says, "mud washes off". we then made our way back to the entrance, avoiding slipping and sliding down some slopes. full of mud we put on our vertical gear and climbed out of the pit. avis had some "handi wipes" which she shared with us to get the mud off. i would rate this cave as muddy as pettijohns, but there aren't as many crawls so you don't get as muddy. after leaving the cave we went to see what the horse pens are. when we got there they wanted us to pay them a .00 day usage fee. we had seen "rocks" before so we left without paying. then we went to the palisades park four miles north of oneonta to watch the rappellers. everyone's gear and clothing was muddy so nobody felt like rappelling. we took the trail down to the bottom and then found some spots where we could climb out without vertical gear. after that we visited for a while and everyone started on their way back and poker advice.
